Neymar: Not my best season

Neymar conceded the 2015-16 campaign “hasn’t been my best season” but was keen to put Barcelona’s happiness of a 24th League title over his own.

Neymar’s explosive start to the season, which reached a head when Lionel Messi was absent between September and November, tailed off after the New Year as he failed to score in 10 of his final 17 League games, and he acknowledged he could have done better.

“This hasn’t been my best season,” the forward told Globo Esporte.

“I always like to surpass my statistics and records. I always want to better myself every day.

“Still, I’m proud of the League title that we’ve won, not only for my performances but those of the entire team.

“I have to congratulate my teammates as it was hard work [to achieve it].

“We had to work hard for the title because it was a difficult campaign. In the end, we got our rewards.

“[Luis Suarez] is a great player. He’s not just a goalscorer but also a playmaker.

“Besides being a good teammate, he’s a great friend and I’m so happy for him.

“We must always try to help him the best we can so he wins the Pichichi each season.

“The most important facet of our success is our team spirit and the happiness we feel when we help each other.

“[On the Olympics], I know that Brazilians dream of this Olympic medal.

“I also love it and I’ll fight for it. I know the fans have put their trust in me and I’ll try not to disappoint them.

“[On missing the Copa America], I’m not frustrated [about missing out].

“How can I be frustrated if I’m playing in a tournament I’ve never won [referring to the Olympics]?

“Of course I was excited about playing in both competitions, but I respect the decision that’s been taken.”
