Mathieu in, Gameiro out for France

Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has been included in France’s squad for Euro 2016, but Sevilla’s Kevin Gameiro is only on the standby list.

Mathieu has proved his fitness after six weeks out with a knee injury, sustained while on international duty in March, yet Gameiro’s 28 goals this season are not enough for him to capitalise on Karim Benzema’s exile as the striker joins Morgan Schneiderlin and Hatem Ben Arfa on the fringes.

The other La Liga representatives in Didier Deschamps’ 23-man party are Real Madrid stopper Raphael Varane and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

France squad for Euro 2016 in full: Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Mandanda (Marseille), Costil (Rennes); Varane (Real Madrid), Koscielny (Arsenal), Mangala (Manchester City), Mathieu (Barcelona), Evra (Juventus), Sagna (Manchester City), Digne (Roma), Jallet (Lyon), Pogba (Juventus), Matuidi (Paris Saint-Germain), Cabaye (Crystal Palace), Diarra (Marseille), Kante (Leicester City), Sissoko (Newcastle United), Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Martial (Manchester United), Giroud (Arsenal), Gignac (Tigres), Payet (West Ham United), Coman (Bayern Munich)
