Clemente: I can succeed Del Bosque

Javier Clemente believes only one man is capable of succeeding Vicente del Bosque after this summer’s European Championships – himself.

The 66-year-old, who has already had one spell in charge of La Roja between 1992 and 1998, is currently in charge of the Libyan national team, but is in no doubt he is capable over taking over his country’s football team once more.

“The best substitute for Del Bosque would be me. I’d love it. It was the best time of my life,” said Clemente in an interview with Onda Cero’s ‘Al primer toque’ programme.

“It’s a blessing to coach your national team, even with the journalists who want to get rid of you or love you, and the demands from home.

“I think we’ve got a good team but I don’t see us winning the competition. It’s going to be very difficult.”

Clemente was also asked his opinion on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid team and their achievement of reaching another Champions League final.

“Cholo has a good team that has operated very well and played at a really high level. People say they play on the edge of the rules. Well, you play on the edge of the rules as long as the referee permits it and allows things.

“Atleti have had a great campaign and Cholo is a much admired Coach.”
