A plan to revamp the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, inspired by basketball’s final four, has reportedly been discussed.
AS cites Catalunya Radio as reporting the proposal, which would see the competition’s two semi-finals and the final played in one city, with the Euroliga basketball tournament send to be the inspiration.
The idea was reportedly discussed at a meeting last week and would need the go-ahead from the Spanish Football Federation [RFEF], but with Angel Maria Villar in line to replace Michel Platini as UEFA President, that would likely be a formality.
AS draws a comparison to England’s FA Cup, which stages the semi-finals and final at Wembley, though they take place over a matter of weeks whereas the new Copa del Rey would see the semis played in mid-week and the final at the weekend.
The clubs are believed to be in favour of the idea but there is a concern over the number of cities that would be able to host three games in such short time and have the hotels to accommodate fans from four clubs.
