‘Sporting hope for another miracle’

Sporting Gijon Coach Abelardo believes another ‘miracle’ can happen and his side can avoid relegation.

The Asturians go into the final weekend of the season in the bottom three and have to beat Villarreal and hope Getafe lose at Real Betis to have any hope of preventing an immediate return to the Segunda, and could have gone down on Sunday if their 1-1 draw at Getafe had been a 2-1 defeat.

“We have to win and we rely on Getafe’s result. We’re alive, hurting, but not sunk. We have to win the last game and hope Betis don’t lose to Getafe,” Abelardo acknowledged, AS reports.

“I hope the Betis players are professional, like Real Sociedad were [against Rayo Vallecano]. I also hope the Villarreal players want to win in Gijon, and it will be very difficult to win. We’re still alive and we will fight and hopefully another miracle, like last year [when Sporting were promoted] can occur.

“I think we would have beaten Getafe if not for [Nacho Cases’] sending off. I can’t ask the players for more. We had the ambition to win, knowing we’d be down if we conceded a second. We’ve tried everything and the boys made a great effort. I also want to thank everyone who came from Gijon. It’s amazing, and the fans we have are why we’ll stay up.”
