La Liga set for penultimate round

The destination of the title could be decided today while the relegation picture can change in La Liga’s penultimate round of fixtures.

Barcelona are the only one of the three title challengers who could be crowned champions today – if they beat Espanyol at Camp Nou in a Catalan derby, Atletico Madrid lose at Levante and Real Madrid do anything other than win at home to Valencia.

Atletico could even in that scenario catch Barca on points – by winning their final game of the season and Barca losing theirs – but La Blaugrana come out on top in the head-to-head record, winning each League game this season, both 2-1.

The race to avoid relegation is tightly contested – Levante are already down but with two games to play Getafe, Sporting Gijon, Rayo Vallecano, Granada, Deportivo La Coruna, Espanyol, and Real Betis are all still in danger.

Betis can avoid the drop by taking a point from their trip to Eibar and it is Getafe and Sporting, who round out the bottom three with Levante, in greatest peril.

But Getafe, Sporting and Rayo are level on points with Getafe hosting Sporting in a game that could prove crucial to the hopes of each side – and those around them.

The fourth Champions League place will go to Villarreal no matter the results of the final two rounds, and Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo are fighting for fifth.

Athletic are at Las Palmas, where veteran Juan Carlos Valeron will be honoured in his final home game before retirement.
