Vidal: Ugly football won

Arturo Vidal claims Atletico Madrid’s “ugly football” unfairly prevailed over “the best team in the world” in Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Xabi Alonso’s deflected free kick levelled the Champions League semi-final tie, yet Thomas Muller’s subsequent penalty was saved by Jan Oblak, before Antoine Griezmann scored the all-important away goal for Atleti, leaving Vidal bitter about the Germans’ elimination from the competition.

“I don’t know why the ball wouldn’t go in,” the midfielder said after the second leg.

“We created so many chances in both games, but the ball didn’t go in.

“They played ugly football against the best team in the world.

“The only time [Atleti] saw the ball was when they scored their goal.

“We’re very sad, but we still have two trophies that we hope to win.

“We’re the best team in the world, although sometimes the best don’t win.

“Sometimes football is like that. [On Tuesday], the best team were eliminated.

“I think we were superior in both games, we controlled possession, but we didn’t take our chances.

“They seized theirs very well, so they’re in the final. Football is like this.”
