Adan ‘wants to do Madrid favour’

Antonio Adan hopes Real Betis beat Barcelona as the former Real Madrid goalkeeper is backing his old club “win as many trophies as possible”.

The Catalans head into Week 36 of La Liga top by the sole virtue of their superior head-to-head record against Madrid and Atletico, and ahead of their match against Betis, rival glovesman Adan reiterated his desire “to ruin Barca’s League” out of loyalty to Los Blancos.

“I said what I said, but it was normal,” he told Marca.

“I was at Real Madrid for 16 years. I’m a madridista, I’ve never hidden it and my desire is that Real Madrid win as many trophies as possible, providing Betis don’t have a chance.

“[The outcry] is understandable, but my wish that Madrid win trophies is also understandable.

“It’s true that Atletico Madrid are second and will benefit if we get something positive [against Barca] on Saturday, but that would take away a little of the fight to Barcelona and stay between Atletico and Real Madrid.

“I don’t see it as a way of giving back everything they’ve given me. It’s impossible [repaying them] this way.

“They made me as a player and also formed me as a person. Helping them would be great, but it’s impossible to give back everything they’ve given me in those 90 minutes.

“Barcelona are the likeliest team [to win La Liga], of course, because they’re relying on themselves, but hopefully we can win the game and Madrid can win the title.”
