Inigo renews with La Real

Inigo Martinez has agreed a new contract with Real Sociedad until 2021, with a €40m release clause.

AS reports the defender’s contract was due to expire in 2017 and the extension was announced on Tuesday morning by the Basque club.

It’s noted by AS that the negotiations between club and player weren’t always smooth as the parties couldn’t agree on wages or Inigo’s escape clause, but terms have now been settled.

Indeed, AS say the agreement was reached weeks ago and was put on hold until the club’s future in the Primera was confirmed, which it now is.

Inigo’s clause will be raised from €30m and the new deal makes him one of the best-paid players at Anoeta, in the same bracket as Carlos Vela, Asier Illarramendi and Jonathas, which was one of his demands.

The intention is for La Real to build the team around Inigo over the coming years and he’s marked as the captain of the team when Xabi Prieto retires.
