Marcelino: Villarreal had no spark

Marcelino rued Villarreal “letting a great opportunity slip” after his side “had no spark” in Sunday’s stalemate with Real Sociedad.

Villarreal’s winless run in La Liga was extended to three matches after they failed to break down La Real, also without a victory in three, to leave the door open for one of Athletic Bilbao, Celta Vigo and Sevilla to catch them in fourth place.

“It was a final and a key game, and we let a great opportunity slip,” the Coach said after the game.

“The team were tired and had no spark. It cost us to defend, attack and do anything.

“We lost many duels and played many misplaced passes. They made the pitch big and made it difficult for us to press.

“They knew how to keep the ball and when we recovered it, we had no spark.

“We didn’t do enough to win. We were neither good nor comfortable.

“They pushed up high, but we had no clarity or mobility [in our play].”
