Suarez ‘would welcome Pichichi’

Luis Suarez admits while Barcelona winning La Liga remains his priority, he “would welcome” the Pichichi after his four goals against Sporting Gijon.

Suarez netted a ‘poker’ for the second game running in Barca’s 6-0 victory over Sporting on Saturday to move him three goals clear of Cristiano Ronaldo on 34 and into the lead for the League’s top-scorer award with only three matches left.

“I’m surprised to have scored eight goals in three days,” the forward said after the game.

“Still, I always want to help the team. It was a difficult first half.

“It wasn’t my objective to be the top scorer, but if it happens then I’d welcome it. The priority is the League.

“We didn’t play with the pace we wanted, neither did we play the ball at the speed we needed to.

“For that, we had the half-time break to reflect and realise that we weren’t playing well.

“Messi is the one who is in charge at all times and manages the team. When he plays well, the team appreciate it. He’s helped us a lot this season.

“[On leaving a penalty to Neymar], more than anything is the confidence he’ll have gained, which helps the team and benefits us all.

“[On his PKU tribute when scoring his first goal], it’s very important to us, the children and adults. I wanted to thank them for the love they showed me.”
