MLS admits Casillas interest

MLS Vice-President Lino DiCuollo admits its clubs have been in contact with Iker Casillas as Porto drop the former Real Madrid goalkeeper indefinitely.

Despite Casillas’ wish to stay at Porto next season, speculation persists that the fallen Portuguese champions will look to move him on in the summer, and the US is shaping up to be a viable destination as there is a desire “for a deal to be closed as soon as possible” by one of its top-flight clubs.

“It’s true that our clubs have been in contact with Iker’s agents,” DiCuollo told Maisfutebol.

“I don’t know if a deal will be closed for next season, but our desire is for that to happen as soon as possible.

“He has a contract with Porto and, therefore, [our clubs] have said that if he wants to come [to the US] then he should talk to his club first.”

The Spain veteran’s performances for Porto since his arrival from Real Madrid last summer have been a mixed bag, to the extent that Coach Jose Peseiro announced on Thursday that the custodian had lost his status as the side’s first choice between the sticks.

“In order to prevent further speculation, it has been decided that Helton will be the goalkeeper in our next League game and alternate with Casillas until the end of the season because [Casillas] needs minutes for the Portuguese Cup, given he’s our goalkeeper in that tournament,” the trainer stated.
