President Aranzabal to leave Eibar

Eibar President Alex Aranzabal will step down at the end of the season after seven historic years in the role.

Aranzabal took executive control of Eibar in January 2009, succeeding the now-deceased Jaime Barriuso when the club were still in Segunda B, and presided over Los Armeros’ first-ever promotion to La Liga just five years later.

Despite only staying up by the virtue of Elche’s demotion to the second tier last summer, the Basques are all-but-certain to avoid relegation this time out as they sit 11th in the table with four games remaining, nine points afloat.

The 41-year-old has also played a key role in the globalisation of Eibar, who now have 24 supporters clubs in Spain and many more around the world, rather than just the two in their locality.
