Ramos: Zidane stays, Ronaldo rests

Sergio Ramos “hopes” Zinedine Zidane stays on as Real Madrid Coach and believes “it wouldn’t hurt from time to time” if Cristiano Ronaldo was rested.

Having already given his opinion on Madrid’s arch-rivals to Cadena COPE’s El Partido de las 12, Ramos was then quizzed on matters closer to home in light of Zidane’s promising start to life in the dugout and Ronaldo’s fitness.

“I hope [Zidane] renews. He’s proving to be a great Coach,” the defender said.

“It’s clear that the affinity which is there now with Zidane wasn’t there with [Rafa] Benitez, but we never forced him out. I’ve never tried to force a Coach out.

“No-one can think that we’d want to throw stones against our own roof.

“We know how important [Ronaldo] is for the team and we hope he arrives in good shape for the game against [Manchester] City.

“He is super-ambitious, wants to play every game and score goals even when he sleeps.

“I haven’t met a Coach who’s told him, ‘Cristiano, the bench’.

“It wouldn’t hurt if he rested from time to time, but he doesn’t like to rest when he’s playing for individual awards such as the Golden Boot.

“[On selling Ronaldo], I wouldn’t sell him, not for anything.”
