Marcelino: We could have done better

Marcelino felt Villarreal ‘could have done better’ as they lost 3-0 at Real Madrid, potentially harming their Champions League chances.

The Yellow Submarine remain in fourth place in La Liga with four games to go but have Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo six points behind ahead of a game against Real Sociedad this weekend.

“We have to add points. We’ve had two away games, both defeats [losing at Rayo Vallecano last weekend], but it’s a final on Sunday against La Real. It might not be definitive but that game is a final,” Marcelino said, AS reports.

The Coach was asked why it appeared he was giving his players a lot of instruction at Santiago Bernabeu, and said that while he felt they started well, it was downhill from there.

“We were good defensively in the first half. Madrid dominated us, but they didn’t create chances. Let’s say that I believed we could improve the offensive balance of the team. We made Madrid run but we weren’t connecting with the forwards,” he complained.

“In fact, I think the first time we caused danger was after conceding to Karim Benzema. I wasn’t happy and I don’t think our offensive work had the right criteria. We could have done better. It’s a shame that from our throw-in, they’ve scored. That hurt us a lot.”
