Merino not thinking of Sevilla

Real Betis Coach Juan Merino isn’t thinking of the weekend’s derby with Sevilla, only Tuesday’s visit of Las Palmas.

The Sevilla derby takes place on Sunday at Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan but Merino insists he has his attention firmly on the islanders.

“We don’t think of [the derby] but winning [on Tuesday] because we would be almost mathematically safe,” he told a pre-match Press conference, AS reports.

“It’s clear the derby is a game we want to win and we will give it 150% because it’s a final. But I’ll pick my best team [against Las Palmas]. I won’t spare anyone.”

Betis also have to host Barcelona in the coming weeks and Merino admitted he’d prefer the Catalans to be sailing rather than struggling, and dismissed questions about his future past the end of the season.

“As Betis Coach I’d have preferred Barca came here having already won the League. As a fan, everything is equal and it’s interesting,” he said of the title race.

“I’m not thinking about next season, only finishing as high as possible and achieving the goal for which we were entrusted. I was proud of my team [in the 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo] and I hope we can continue like this.”
