Berizzo ‘wants sprint, not marathon’

Eduardo Berizzo insists Celta Vigo must “embark on the final sprint, not rely on our momentum” ahead of Saturday’s match against Real Betis in La Liga.

A run of only one defeat in eight matches has left Celta five points from a Champions League place, providing they beat Betis this weekend, and Berizzo made it clear his side could not rest on their laurels if they were to realise their objective of European qualification.

“We come [into the game] very strong and now we must embark on the final sprint,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Our feelings and dynamics are very good, and we have those things to give us strength for what’s coming.

“In any case, we can’t be distracted by anything other than looking to win the next game.

“We’re at a point in the season where we have to imagine a final sprint more than the momentum we’ve gained.

“Having run a marathon of 32km picking up points, the competition now forces us to sprint, not rely on our momentum.

“Planning for fifth or sixth place has nothing to do with being seventh, so we want to finish as high as possible. Either way, our objective remains to reach the Europa League.

“We’ll need to play with a highly mobile, dynamic and sustained attack.”
