Gameiro a step closer to Barca?

Kevin Gameiro is reportedly a step closer to joining Barcelona as Mundo Deportivo understands the Sevilla striker is prepared to be fourth-choice at Camp Nou.

Gameiro has emerged as Barca’s top attacking target thanks to his playing style and 24 goals with Sevilla this season, and the newspaper claims the club have held an interest in the player since the end of 2015.

Despite being behind Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar if he were to sign, the Frenchman is believed to have accepted a peripheral role – on the condition he is compensated for his sacrifice.

However, the ‘MSN’ are expected to be given more rests next season, with the trident’s recent slump exposing the lack of options the side have when they are not performing at their best.

Consequently, Gameiro’s ability to play anywhere across the front line and tenacious nature makes him an attractive proposition for La Blaugrana, although the forward has two years left on his contract and a €40m release clause.

Nonetheless, the two clubs share good relations, with the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Dani Alves and Adriano swapping Andalusia for Catalonia since 2008, while Sevilla could negotiate a knockdown price if Alen Halilovic is part of the deal.

In the meantime, the 28-year-old is focusing on Sevilla’s Champions League push, Copa del Rey final and Europa League semi-finals.

Karim Benzema’s confirmation that he will not be considered by France for Euro 2016 this summer has also opened the door for the former Paris Saint-Germain man to enter the international fold.
