Torres ‘wants to be Atleti’s Totti’

Fernando Torres hopes to emulate Juan Carlos Valeron or Francesco Totti and remain with Atletico Madrid until he approaches 40.

Valeron is still turning out for Las Palmas while Totti remains on the books at Roma and Torres’ contract at Vicente Calderon expires this summer.

“I hope I could be the Valeron or Totti of Atleti, but today more than ever I don’t want to talk about that,” he told El Laguero, AS reports.

“Hopefully I can do what Valeron has done and have the years in football he has had.”

Torres, who also discussed his sending off against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final, considered his recent good form.

“I’ve had a few difficult days and you think about your relationship with the club, it takes days to return to the dynamic and you have to turn the page again,” he considered.

“What I feel more than ever is the support of the fans and that makes me feel very proud and responsible.

“I know how important the Champions League is but there’s also La Liga, that’s why the team went out as it did against Espanyol.

“It was a match in which the team showed a personality that is no longer surprising. People maybe thought the League was far out of reach but the team went to win because it was the most important thing at that time. Barca lost and we got three points.

“We were at the airport [when Real Sociedad scored against Barca]. The Espanyol game was important, it was necessary to win and now we have an historic game for the club and we don’t have to call anyone [to Vicente Calderon], I believe they’ll be there.”
