Escriba: Getafe wounded, not dead

Fran Escriba asserted Getafe “are wounded but not dead” as Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Villarreal in La Liga marked their 12th game without a win.

Goals from Denis Suarez and Cedric Bakambu left El Geta further adrift of safety, while maintaining the Yellow Submarine’s eight-point lead on fourth place with only six games remaining, but the Coach was adamant his side just needed a victory to revive their season.

“We matched them on a footballing level,” he said after the game.

“We did better in the first half than the second, and I dare say we played the better football at times.

“We’ve conceded so many goals, that [winning] becomes harder for us.

“Nothing had happened before the first goal. The team did well in the first half, but any blow to our situation hurts us more.

“I’m not worried about my future. With or without me, the team have to get out of where they are and just focus on the next game.

“We need a victory like all the teams around us. A win would give us life. We’re wounded but not dead.”
