Simeone: Atleti won’t stop fighting

Diego Simeone has made it clear that Atletico Madrid will not stop fighting for the La Liga title after Saturday’s 3-1 win at Espanyol.

Goals from Fernando Torres – his third in as many games – Antonio Griezmann and Koke fired Atleti to a comeback victory, which also moved them to within three points of Barcelona at the top of the table, and Simeone was delighted with the application of his players.

“I’m very happy with the work of the players after their efforts from the other night with a man down,” the Coach said after the game.

“Espanyol’s opening goal could’ve impaired us, but it had quite the opposite effect. We persevered in the pursuit of victory.

“Our second half was very complete. We were strong and that’s what the game is all about.

“An important victory of this magnitude creates enthusiasm for us.

“I was taught that you must insist and believe in what you do.

“Things fall on their own if they have to fall. We’re giving everything we’ve got. We’re intense and persistent and we’ll keep fighting.

“We have four days [until the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barca] and we’ll certainly be in very good shape for the game.

“[On Torres], a teammate will come in for him on Wednesday and will do so with the determination and enthusiasm needed by the game.

“Torres is persistent, he’s earned everything which is happening to him.

“[Griezmann] keeps growing with purity. He’s fantastic and I like him very much.”
