‘Marcelo deserved a red card’

Wolfsburg Coach Dieter Hecking felt Real Madrid’s Marcelo should have been sent off for an altercation with Maxi Arnold.

Madrid lost 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with the Germans and Hecking told reporters post-match Marcelo was lucky to stay on the pitch, after he was seen laughing with the Brazilian in the mixed zone.

“It was because of the situation with Arnold. I didn’t think the yellow card he got was deserved,” Hecking said, AS reports, after Marcelo appeared to kick out at the scorer of Wolfsburg’s second goal, then feign a facial injury when the midfielder barely reacted.

“You don’t have to act as he has. Marcelo in that situation deserved a red card.”

Hecking added that he wasn’t sure if Madrid should have been awarded a penalty on Gareth Bale with the score at 0-0, and preferred to look ahead to Tuesday’s game at Santiago Bernabeu.

“I didn’t see the situation with Bale. I don’t know what to say about the penalty. There are always discussions and it’s the same on our penalty,” he noted.

“That’s always the case in football, you’re looking for mistakes. As [Zinedine] Zidane said, we will analyse the game.

“It doesn’t help to regret in football and we concentrate on Tuesday. We’ll see what Madrid’s reaction is. Let’s see if we can play like we did today.”
