‘Espanyol players the culprits’

Victor Sanchez says he and his fellow Espanyol players were at fault for Sergio Gonzales’ sacking and that’s why they saved Constantin Galca.

Sergio was dismissed and replaced by Galca earlier in the season but with Los Periquitos still struggling, the Romanian was on the brink before Victor, Javi Lopez, Victor Alvarez and Abraham defended Galca to the board.

“We bottomed out against Real Sociedad [a 5-0 defeat at home]. I’ve never felt so bad. We thought that game was going to be the turning point and it was the opposite,” Victor told Mundo Deportivo.

“The club has asked us a lot because they want to know our opinions. We said there are players who should step up because if things don’t go well with a Coach, [the Coach is] replaced.

“Things weren’t going well with the new Coach and the players were the culprits in both the departure of the first Coach and what happened to the second.

“We told them that if we were giving our level, we’d win games. That’s all we talked about.

“It was similar with Sergio. We weren’t good, we weren’t confident. The club suddenly decided to change Coach. We gave everything for him until the last game.

“We were upset he was sacked because it’s not nice for anyone and even more so when you feel guilty. But we have to move forward.”
