Aduriz: Age just a number

Athletic Bilbao’s Aritz Aduriz admits he can only think short-term at 35 but isn’t concerned by his more advanced years. ‘It’s just a number…’

The veteran striker has seen his prolific form lead to a return to the Spain fold, six years after his first appearance, Aduriz scoring in the recent friendly with Italy, and he says he still loves the game.

“It’s difficult to be much more active. I have to think short-term,” he said, AS reports.

“The important thing is to enjoy the moment. I keep the same enthusiasm for training or playing going forward.

“Age is just a number. I learn every day. Football still gives me a lot of entertainment.

“I’d love to go to Euro 2016. I try to do my best work but the decision isn’t in my hands. There’s still a lot of time before June and some very nice challenges with Athletic.

“Spain are one of the favourites as reigning champions because they’ve shown they are able to compete with the best.

“This season two very nice things have come together – the individual and the collective. It’s the best season of my life because I’ve won a trophy with Athletic and because I feel important in the team.

“Ernesto Valverde’s renewal is great news. He deserves it. He makes you comfortable. Football is a complicated world and he’s normal in any situation. He knows how to act perfectly as the circumstances arise.”
