Torres: Renewal not up to me

Fernando Torres repeats his desire to win a trophy with Atletico Madrid but insists a contract extension ‘isn’t a question for me.’

Torres’ second spell at Vicente Calderon is due to come to an end in the summer when his deal expires and as yet there is no movement from the club to extend his terms.

“[My dream is] to win the title with Atletico. I want to celebrate a title with this team,” he said, AS reports.

“We’ve experienced very good things. I started [with Atletico] in the Segunda, so it would be the perfect finishing touch for me.

“Contract? It’s not a question for me. There’s nothing new.”

Atletico next week face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final but El Nino insisted the attention was on the weekend’s League game against Real Betis.

“Our motto is game to game and that’s something. And we won’t look beyond the encounter with Betis,” he stressed.

“The more players we have fit for this game, the better. The team can overcome the injuries.”

Torres was speaking to promote a new advert from Mahou, a sponsor of Atletico, with the promotion featuring the son of the late Luis Aragones, Torres’ Coach at Atletico and with the Spain team.

“Luis is a very important person for all lovers of football. He changed the way we see Spanish football and it all started with him,” Torres noted of the Euro 2008-winning trainer.

“We went through a very tough stage where at the beginning, no one believed in him.”
