Season over for Laporte?

Athletic Bilbao could be without Aymeric Laporte for the rest of the season after the defender suffered an ankle fracture while on France Under-21 duty.

The defender looked to be in some distress when he was hauled off an hour into his country’s 2-0 victory over Scotland in European U21 Championship qualifying on Friday after his right ankle took the full weight of an opponent.

A statement on Athletic’s official website reads: “The player suffered an injury to his right ankle during the Under-21 match between Scotland and France.

“The first scan detected a fracture-dislocation on his right fibula and ankle.

“On his return to Bilbao, he will be subjected to further tests, after which the extent of his injury and absence will be determined.”

Speculation prior to Athletic’s official correspondence ranged from Laporte avoiding injury altogether to knee ligament damage.
