Banega ‘one game from extension’

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has insisted that Ever Banega’s contract will be automatically extended until 2017 “if he plays one more game”.

Speculation has persisted that Banega’s current deal stipulates an additional year if he plays 30 games for Sevilla in 2015-16, despite contrasting claims Inter have agreed a pre-contract with the midfielder, but Monchi confirmed the clause, although he expressed concerns about the player’s mental state.

“We’re making too big a deal about Ever’s situation when it’s very easy,” he said at a club event on Friday, Marca reports.

“If he plays one more game, his contract will be extended until June 30, 2017.

“From there, if he goes or not, what has to happen will happen.

“We’re living for the present and what worries us right now is Banega’s current level of involvement.

“We’re trying to ensure his contract isn’t just extended by a year but even longer.

“Still, we also understand that he can listen to offers like anyone else.

“That’s an objective fact, but [for him] to play with the future in mind isn’t a very good idea.”
