Emery: Basel need no motivation

Unai Emery has urged his players to respect opponents Basel in their first-leg Europa League Last 16 clash at St Jakob-Park on Thursday.

The final of the competition will be played at the same venue on May 18, with Emery well aware that the Swiss outfit will need no extra motivation when they take on the current holders.

“It’s a tie I’m really looking forward to and our aim is to be prepared for 180 minutes of football, or even more,” he told a Press conference.

“We have to show our opponents respect because they have extra desire to get through against us, who they see as favourites, because the game will be on their home ground. However, we have to show that on the pitch and we want to win, but it won’t be easy.

“Valencia lost 3-0 here two years ago so we need to remain focused. We have a lot of experience in these ties but every game in the Last 16 demands a lot of you.

“Preparation and confidence must be at the maximum if we are to succeed,” he added.
