Athletic legend Iriondo passes away

Athletic Bilbao are mourning the passing of one of the club’s legends, Rafael Iriondo, who has passed away aged 97.

Iriondo was the last surviving member of the Athletic front line of the 1940s and 1950s, AS reports, which including Telmo Zarra, until recently the League’s record goal scorer before his tally was bettered by Lionel Messi.

Athletic won one Primera title, four Copas del Rey and one Copa Eva Duarte during Iriondo’s 13-year career, a tenure in which he scored 117 goals in 326 games.

Iriondo also won two caps for Spain and later coached Los Leones to the Copa del Rey, as well as training Real Sociedad Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis, among others, having also turned out for Barakaldo and La Real in his playing days.

He claimed a second Copa as a Coach during his time at Betis, beating Athletic in the Final in 1977.
