‘Atleti fighting, Cholo knows…’

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo insists the title isn’t Barcelona’s, and talks Diego Simeone’s future.

Simeone has been linked with the bench at Chelsea but Cerezo, in speaking to Onda Cero’s Al Primer Toque, suggested he isn’t worried about losing the Coach.

“He has a contract, there’s been a lot of talk but Cholo knows where he wants to be,” Marca reports Cerezo saying.

“He’s a magnificent Coach who transmits a lot on and off the field.”

Simeone took Atletico to the title in 2014 and his side only trail Barca as it stands today, and though the gap is eight points, Cerezo stresses Atleti won’t give up.

“We’ll continue fighting while it’s mathematically still possible. It’s not been decided. Barca are going well but they could fail. We have to be ready for that error,” he advised.

The Champions League is Atleti’s other option for silverware this season, with PSV Eindhoven the opponents on Wednesday.

“We have to go out to win knowing we play against a great team,” Cerezo said of the Dutch outfit.

“The European Cup is one of the things we want and we won’t stop until we get it.”

Cerezo also touched on two Atleti strikers, one on the books, Fernando Torres, and another sold in February after only a few months, Jackson Martinez.

“It’s a joy for all Atletico fans that Torres is here,” he said of El Nino.

“Jackson didn’t adapt although I still think he can be one of the best strikers. China offered a lot of money.”
