Victor: Safety first

Victor Sanchez is still thinking about avoiding relegation despite Deportivo La Coruna being in the European qualification mix.

The Galicians are ninth after 24 rounds and the Europa League places could extend to seventh this season, depending on other clubs’ success in Europe and the Copa del Rey, but Victor has told AS that staying up remains the priority.

“We’ve been closer to Europe than relegation for some time, but we don’t lose the priority and the objective, which is to stay up,” the trainer insisted.

“Being seventh would mean we’re safe, yes. We’re going to try to achieve that because we want to stay up in the highest position possible. We’ve said we’re ambitious from the beginning.

“Staying up is of course something to celebrate. It’s the target, set with tremendous clarity. It’s vital to stay in the Primera so the club is viable. Of course it’s something to celebrate. We’ve got the second-lowest salary cap.”

It was put to Victor that qualifying for the Europa League could bring a financial burden Depor may struggle to carry.

“I don’t know if the economic consequences would be positive or negative. There’s no fear of anything. We show that in every game,” he replied.

“We’re a brave team that comes back from setbacks. But we don’t think about that, we’re in the 2015-16 Primera.”

Victor recently signed a new terms at Riazor but it is only a one-year deal, and the conflict between his short contract and talk of a long-term project was raised.

“There was talk of three years but one was chosen for simplicity. Clauses with more years and clauses for the finances of the club,” he explained.

“There was no hurry or worry. My emotional attachment is tremendous and the longer I’m here, the better. That would mean doing well at Deportivo, and then, my staff.

“There won’t be problems in the future. Now we have to create a base of performance of the players and continue tweaking the debt to try and stabilise Depor where it always was.”
