Zidane backs anti-Barca stance

Zinedine Zidane agrees with Real Madrid fans’ stance against hosting the Copa del Rey final but insists “it’s for the club to decide”.

Madrid are reportedly unwilling to sanction the Santiago Bernabeu as the venue for the Copa del Rey final, hosted by Barcelona and Sevilla, due to their rivalry with the Catalans, and the Coach was in favour of the supporters’ view.

“It’s normal that madridistas don’t want to see Barcelona win the cup at the Bernabeu,” he said at a Press conference ahead of Saturday’s match against Athletic Bilbao.

“Whether or not the cup final will be played at the Bernabeu is for the club to decide. I only care about the game against Athletic.

“I don’t care if Barcelona win the final at the Bernabeu. I’ll watch the final because I like football and I don’t care who wins.

“I’m tired of discussing the Benzema theme [in relation to the Mathieu Valbuena blackmail case].

“It’d be great if it ended soon. He only wants to focus on his football and I think there’s little remaining about this issue.

“It’s normal that [Jose] Mourinho wants [Raphael] Varane. He’s the one who brought him to Madrid.

“What I can say is that he’s a Madrid player and I want him to stay here because he’s part of the team’s future.”
