Galca gets Espanyol reprieve

Constantin Galca will take Espanyol to Valencia this weekend despite it looking almost certain he’d be sacked after Monday’s home defeat.

Espanyol were routed at Cornella-El Prat by Real Sociedad and reports from Catalonia on Tuesday said Joaquin Caparros had been contacted about taking over.

Galca met with CEO Ramon Robert and director Mao Ye and their intention was to let go of the Romanian, but the four team captains – Javi Lopez, Victor Sanchez, Victor Alvarez and Abraham – came to his defence.

The players’ intervention convinced the club to halt Galca’s sacking and instead attention has turned to another role – finding a new sporting director to replace Oscar Pernau, who recently left the club.

Whoever is appointed as sporting director will then be responsible for determining the Coach’s future, taking the decision out of the hands of the club higher-ups.
