Oblak re-signs with Atletico

Jan Oblak has signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid and is now tied to Vicente Calderon until 2021.

Oblak’s previous deal ran until 2020, the Slovenian international having moved to Atletico from Benfica in 2014 to replace Thibaut Courtois, who returned to Chelsea after three years on loan to Los Colchoneros.

“It shows the club trust me and I’m very happy about that and grateful to everyone who has helped me renew,” he said, AS reports.

“I feel very good, to be honest. I’m very happy here, with the whole team, the technical staff and all the people working here. So I renewed because I want to continue here.

“[Clean sheets] aren’t only my work, it’s the work of the whole team. To play well, defend well and concede the fewest goals.

“We work hard, always try to win and hopefully we can achieve what we want by the end of the season.

“When I’m playing I’m focused on the game but when I hear [the supporters cheering his name] I’m happy. I want to make them happy.”

Initially sharing the gloves with Miguel Angel Moya, Oblak eventually won the starting spot under Diego Simeone and this season has conceded only 11 League goals.
