Torres ‘honoured’ by 100th Atleti goal

Fernando Torres says he is “honoured” to have scored his 100th Atletico Madrid goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Eibar.

The striker had been stuck on 99 goals since September, when he coincidentally scored against Los Armeros, but he finally ended his barren spell in the rematch the Vicente Calderon, and he spoke of his pride at reaching the milestone after the game.

“Scoring is a reward because I’m still here after so many years, at the club where I started [my career],” he began.

“Scoring my 100th goal is a reward and an honour to be among the club’s great goalscorers.

“This win means we’re still in the fight. This year must end with a trophy, and this is the way [to get one].

“The more goals, the merrier. [My objectives are] to play as many minutes as possible and continue working hard to remain at the Coach’s disposal.

“[On his future], I’m only focused on our next game next week.

“If we look to the future, we don’t need to look beyond thinking about lifting a trophy.”
