Atletico Madrid midfielder Augusto Fernandez faces two months on the sidelines after partially tearing ligaments in his left knee against Barcelona on Saturday.

Augusto awkwardly flew into a challenge midway in the latter stages of Atleti’s 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou and looked to be in some pain as he quickly called for medical attention, before fellow Argentine and opponent Javier Mascherano warmly embraced him when he departed on a mini-ambulance.

“Now I’m only thinking about recovering,” he said after leaving hospital on Sunday.

“Injuries are ugly, but they’re part of football. It’s never nice when you’re injured, but when you think it’s something more serious and they say it’s less so, you get happy.

“I’ll give it my all to be ready as soon as possible.”

Augusto only joined Atleti at the beginning of January, ironically as a replacement for Tiago Mendes, who fractured his tibia in November and is not expected back until the business end of the season.
