Spanish Football Federation President Angel Maria Villar has asked for more time as he defends against an allegation of improper use of funds.
Villar is accused of loaning RFEF money to Recreativo Huelva to allow Spain’s oldest club to pay a debt to former Coach Jose Luis Oltra.
The Sports Council [CSD] alleges that this is unfair on Villar’s behalf as other clubs didn’t get the same treatment, and if he is found to have breached regulations, he won’t be able to stand for re-election in April.
Villar has already received one delay and on Thursday the CSD received a letter from Villar asking for more time, though AS reports the letter itself caused consternation at the CSD.
The letter was dated January 25, when Villar was in Paraguay, and the signature on it was a photocopy or poor quality scan, suggesting it wasn’t signed by Villar himself. It was also on paper that didn’t carry the RFEF letterhead.
The CSD asked for bank details regarding the alleged payment to be provided to see if any payments sent matched the date of the payment received by Recre and Villar, in this second delay, has until Saturday to provide the information.
AS suggests the delay is to allow Villar to gather information and present a case to FIFA for government interference in the running of a football association, prohibited by FIFA laws, as the CSD is a government department.
