Del Bosque: I’ll step down but…

Vicente Del Bosque confirmed his intention to resign as Spain Coach after Euro 2016 but appeared to leave the door open slightly.

Del Bosque has been offered the chance to renew his contract with the Spanish Football Federation but told an interview with Spanish television that he expects to leave his post this summer.

“If everything is normal, yes [I’ll resign]. [Leaving the bench] would be best for everyone, the national team, the RFEF and for me,” he said, AS reports, but Del Bosque did leave room for a change of heart.

“It’s been an intense eight years and there’s been a lot of responsibility. I’m healthy and I would feel like continuing, but it’s been a lot of years.

“Let’s wait. There’s time remaining to make the best decision.”

Euro 2016 will be the third European Championships to which Del Bosque has led La Roja, winning the other two, and he is targeting further success.

“It’d be the third time we win the European Championships in a row and nobody has done that,” he acknowledged.

“It’s very difficult but we’re encouraged because we are going with a good squad.

“The memory of what happened [at World Cup 2014] has served as an example for us. We play two rivals who qualified ahead of the Netherlands and there’s no need to underestimate Turkey and the Czech Republic.”
