Del Bosque: Casillas wants to be a sub

Vicente Del Bosque reveals Iker Casillas has offered to be a substitute when Spain go to Euro 2016 and recalled problems with Jose Mourinho.

Casillas will remain Spain captain for the tournament in France, but Del Bosque revealed the Porto goalkeeper told him he’d accept a role as an alternate.

“Casillas wants to be at Euro 2016, albeit as a substitute. It’s the gesture of an athlete who has won everything,” he said in a television interview, AS reports.

“Iker is a unique player, who has been in the national team for so long and is living history of the sport.

“He’s the perfect example of what it is to be a Spanish player at the moment, always behaving well and representing the success of recent years.”

Casillas was at Real Madrid when tempers flared between international players from Los Blancos and Barcelona during Mourinho’s time at Santiago Bernabeu, with Del Bosque commending the custodian for his role in calling a truce.

“It was a beautiful gesture that he been recognised worldwide,” he noted.

“We were spectators of a situation that didn’t please anyone. They were clashing so strongly they weren’t setting a good example.

“When you saw them on television you couldn’t like any of them. It was a very ugly chapter.”
