Cholo tells Torres: No deal

Diego Simeone has reportedly told Fernando Torres he won’t be offered a new contract to stay at Atletico Madrid past the end of the season.

AS say the meeting took place on Monday, with chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin present as a witness.

A decision had to be made in the near future as the terms of Atletico’s transfer embargo would prevent additions after the close of the January transfer window, though the club have asked for a precautionary suspension pending appeal.

Torres is on loan at Vicente Calderon from Milan, so his signing wouldn’t be a case of renewing an existing contract but agreeing terms on a new contract after his loan ended.

Gil Marin did add, AS claims, that if the embargo is suspended and Torres performs well between now and the end of the season, there could be a change of heart, but the embargo has to be suspended.

Torres for his part wanted to stay with Atletico and wasn’t interested in any other offers until he knew where the club stood.

Simeone confirmed at a Tuesday Press conference to preview the Copa del Rey second leg with Celta Vigo that he and Torres had discussed the forward’s future, but didn’t confirm what was said.

Torres returned to Atletico a little over a year ago after a 2007 move to Liverpool, later switching to Chelsea, Simeone reportedly asking for Torres to be brought back.
