Merino: Betis building confidence

Juan Merino believes Real Betis are regaining their confidence after taking a hard-earned point against Real Madrid.

Betis took the lead through a spectacular Alvaro Cejudo goal but were pegged back by Karim Benzema, Madrid dominating but unable to find a winner.

“You need a lot to take a point from Madrid. You have to take your chances and they need to not have a good day,” interim Coach Merino said post-match, AS reports.

“Madrid had their chances but we take the point with great joy, though their goal was offside.

“We were a team more than ever, and we were at home where we’ve not had results against big teams. This builds confidence. It’s the right way.”

Merino is expected to be replaced by Juande Ramos in the near future but the supporters in Benito Villamarin called for him to stay.

“I’m very grateful to these supporters. Ever since I arrived at Betis when I was 17, my father instilled in me perseverance and humility. Whether I’m with the first team or the B team I’ll give it all,” he promised.

The transfer window closes for Spanish clubs on January 29, and Merino was asked if he feels new faces are needed at the club.

“I haven’t thought about positions that need to be strengthened. The sporting director’s department knows about that,” he replied.

“We took points from Villarreal and Madrid without new signings, with these players. And I’ll go with them to the death because I am very grateful for what the team has given for me.”
