Valverde coy on Athletic future

Ernesto Valverde says “it’s too early to say” whether he will remain in charge of Athletic Bilbao next season ahead of Sunday’s Basque derby with Eibar.

The Coach has been linked with the Spain job after Euro 2016, but he has also come under fire for another disappointing first half to a campaign, with Los Leones some 13 points behind a Champions League place in La Liga, and he failed to give assurances on his future.

“When you play games so close together, you tend to focus more on one of the two in a week,” he said at a Press conference.

“We want to focus on the game against Eibar because it’s the most important.

“They are having a great season and above us in the table, so for us it’s important

“We have no problems from a mental perspective [after two defeats to Barcelona].

“[On Inaki Williams’ renewal], we’ve given him stability, acknowledgment [of his efforts] and a good contract, and we’ve also tied him down for a long time.

“For us, it’s important that he feels comfortable. I think he is, but it’s also good that the [contract] talks didn’t drag on.

“The club made a great effort to ensure he stayed because we value him, so we’re happy.

“[On his own future], it’s too early to say.

“I’ve already agreed with the club to let the season pass and see how it goes.”
