Official: Levante sign Italy star Rossi

Levante have confirmed the signing of former Villarreal star Giuseppe Rossi on loan until the end of the season from Fiorentina.

Links between the Italy international and La Liga had intensfied over the past week, and he will now look to help Los Granotes avoid relegation and secure his place in the Azzurri squad for Euro 2016.

“Levante and Fiorentina have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Giuseppe Rossi until end of season, pending a satisfactory medical examination,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

His agent Andrea Pastorello added: “Work has been done to close the deal. [Levante] are the club who believe in him the most.

“It’s best to go our separate ways for now, but our intention is to return [to Fiorentina].

“Fiorentina isn’t a ‘goodbye’, but just a ‘see you later’. Now, the most important thing is for [Rossi] to start playing again.

“We hope he repeats what he did at Parma, when he saved the team after they were bottom of [2006-07 Serie A] table.

“We’re sad, but we’ve acted in the best way possible.”

The Spanish Press, however, claim Levante have the option of keeping Rossi permanently for €5m.

Rossi arrived at Villarreal from Manchester United in 2006 as a direct replacement for Diego Forlan and went on to score 82 goals in 192 appearances for the Yellow Submarine, most notably hitting the back of the net 32 times in 2010-11.

Talk of a move to Barcelona arose, but the Catalans eventually plumped for Alexis Sanchez, while the 28-year-old would suffer three serious knee injuries back-to-back.

Levante, meanwhile, are currently bottom of La Liga, four points adrift of safety, with six defeats in their last seven games.
