Merino: Betis are broken

Juan Merino admitted the Real Betis players were left ‘broken’ by a 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat to neighbours Sevilla.

Sevilla ran out 6-0 winners on aggregate after a 2-0 first leg win at Benito Villamarin and took advantage of Betis’ upheaval in the return, with Merino having stepped in for sacked Coach Pepe Mel.

“We’re on a losing streak where the players aren’t happy or comfortable,” Merino admitted, Marca reports.

“As a Betis fan it’s like a death in the family. The pain I feel inside is like something is torn.

“In the second half we were better protected, we played better. The players had a bad time. We’ve a lot of work ahead in all aspects. That’s my work.

“We have to get up as soon as possible, be humble. The players are aware of the situation. They’re professionals and they’re broken. That’s normal.

“We have to do more tomorrow even though we’re broken. I’ll defend my team to the death.”
