Carlos: Ronaldo a phenomenon

Roberto Carlos has offered his opinions members of the Real Madrid squad, evaluating Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Carlos, who could be set for a return to the club in a coaching capacity, appeared on the Punto Pelota radio programme, with his comments picked up by AS.

“Atletico Madrid are good but if Madrid play like they did on Saturday, they’re favourites to be champions,” the former left-back predicted.

“A Coach has come to Madrid who can make Bale better. [Zinedine] Zidane can do what he wants with Bale and make it so Madrid have more players competing for the Ballon d’Or, not just one.”

Ronaldo indeed finished between Lionel Messi and Neymar in the voting for the 2015 world player of the year and has been dogged by rumours about his Madrid future, but Carlos sees him staying at Santiago Bernabeu.

“He’s a phenomenon and will be staying at Madrid for many years,” he insisted.

“Messi still has to do something with his national team. Pele and Diego Maradona are unique.

“Neymar? He’s still very young. It’s complicated to compete with Messi and Ronaldo. Next year he’ll be higher.

“Messi and Ronaldo have to be taken as examples. If the President lets me in the club, I can get Neymar to Madrid!”

Regarding players already at Santiago Bernabeu, after his tongue-in-cheek Neymar promise, Carlos praised Marcelo, Dani Carvajal and Raphael Varane, but not so much Danilo.

“Marcelo is the best left-back in the world,” Carlos said of his compatriot.

“Carvajal is great and Danilo is adapting. Playing for Porto and playing for Madrid is completely different.

“Madrid don’t need any replacements in the centre of defence because they have Varane.”
