Mel sacked by Betis

Real Betis have sacked Coach Pepe Mel for a second time after just 13 months at the helm.

According to Marca, Betis’ board held an emergency meeting at 16:00 GMT on Sunday to discuss Mel’s future after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Getafe left the side just five points clear of the relegation zone in La Liga and without a win in eight games.

It is also believed performances failed to inspire confidence, while the Coach’s relationship with the club had become strained.

Although negotiations for the 52-year-old’s successor have yet to be finalised, Betis are hopeful that a deal will be reached by Wednesday.

B-team boss Juan Merino will take charge of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey last-16 second leg against Sevilla, with the side needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

Mel returned to Betis in December 2014 and reignited their faltering promotion challenge as he guided the Andalucians back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

He was previously dismissed by Betis midway through the 2013-14 season.
