Neville slams ‘ridiculous’ window

Valencia boss Gary Neville has branded January “a ridiculous month for transfers” but hinted at a possible goalkeeping departure.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's trip to Real Sociedad in La Liga, the Englishman made it clear that he was happy with his squad but felt Jaume Domenech, Mat Ryan and Diego Alves all competing for the No 1 jersey was a “luxury”.

“January is a ridiculous month for transfers,” he said at a Press conference.

“We don't foresee any big signings in January. It's a month of madness.

“I agree [playing for the title should be our objective], but it's difficult to win in the League.

“We must start winning again. We showed improvements against Villarreal, [Real] Madrid and Granada, but [wins] must also happen in the League.

“[Alvaro] Negredo scored against Granada and deserved to play, but so do Paco [Alcacer], Rodrigo [Moreno], [Santi] Mina …

“They all need to score in order to get that confidence.

“[Negredo] has worked very hard, doing everything you can expect from him.

“He's gained confidence. We came back well from the Christmas break.

“We have many games ahead, so Alvaro must continue doing well.

“I've seen many of La Real's games and [David] Moyes put together a good team.

“They like to play with the ball and have midfielders who are good on the ball, and if we're not careful, they can hurt us a lot.

“They have two very strong centre-backs. Moyes has left behind a good team.

“We have time [to secure Champions League football], but firstly we need to embark on a winning run and then progress in the Copa del Rey and Europa League

“We must be ready for that. We still have injuries and our challenge [for the CL] depends on our fitness.

“We need to improve in certain areas, but we'll take it step by step.

“I told the players that, in my day, when I was told 22 players were available, there were always going to be 11 who were a little disappointed.

“But I'm trying to be fair and allow everyone to participate.

“There's no-one who hasn't played under me. Everyone's started from zero.

“I've kept my word. It'd be a luxury to have three good goalkeepers for one position.”
