Javier Mascherano may have been the Barcelona player responsible for sparking an altercation with Espanyol, not Luis Suarez.
Suarez was named by referee Juan Martinez Munuera’s post-match report as having called an Espanyol player ‘a waste of space,’ with the players having to be separated after a bad-tempered Copa del Rey derby won by Barca.
But Sport claims the allegation was a surprise to Suarez and it was in fact Mascherano responsible, having waited in the tunnel for the Espanyol players to leave the pitch.
Mascherano and goalkeeper Pau Lopez were allegedly at the centre of the skirmish.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee will on Friday confirm any suspensions from the midweek Cup fixtures and Suarez was facing a ban of between one and three games.
