Butragueno refuses to back Benitez

Real Madrid’s head of PR Emilio Butragueno has refused to confirm whether Rafa Benitez will survive Tuesday’s board meeting.

Benitez’s position remains in the balance following Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Valencia, despite a spirited performance from Madrid and Mateo Kovacic’s red card, and the former Blancos striker did little to appease the speculation.

“We weren’t given a penalty [on Gareth Bale], but in the next phase of play, [Valencia] drew level with a penalty,” he said after the game.

“We began the second half in control, even with 10 men. We were closer to victory than Valencia.

“It’s true that they had a great chance in the final minute, but I think the team deserved something more. It’s a shame we didn’t get the win.

“[On the Bale penalty shout], the referee probably wasn’t in the best position, but the linesman was very close.

“I think the team had a good game. I know the difficulty we posed [Valencia], but the circumstances didn’t help.

“We went down to 10 but didn’t lose control and could’ve scored a third goal, even with 10.

“We didn’t lose our composure, but we didn’t achieve our objective, which was to win here. Still, it’s not a bad thing that we drew.

“[On Benitez keeping his job at Tuesday’s board meeting], the team offered a good account of themselves and we must be very calm.

“[On James Rodriguez missing the game due to his police chase], James spoke to his Coach [on Saturday] and explained the situation.

“He definitely didn’t [get dropped for his involvement].”
