Barcelona technical secretary Robert Fernandez admits “it clearly wasn’t a penalty” against Real Betis but confirms Denis Suarez “is a possibility”.
La Blaugrana set a new Spanish record for goals scored in a calendar year as their 4-0 defeat of Pepe Mel’s men on Wednesday meant they ended 2015 with 180 strikes to their name, but Robert confessed his side should not have been awarded a spot-kick for Lionel Messi’s collision with Antonio Adan in the first half.
“We ended up playing very well and showing signs of security” he said after the game.
“[Suarez] has scored many goals and had many chances [to score more].
“It clearly wasn’t a penalty [on Messi]. The images are clear.
“I was just worried about a possible injury to Messi.
“The referee was wrong, but it’s difficult to say what would have happened [had he not given it].
“When we went forward, we created chances. There’s always time to fix any negative situations.
“We took the game seriously and worked well against a team who made it difficult for us at first.
“The result was minor [in comparison with our performance].
“We’re in a very good run of form. The team are playing well and giving safety signs, but we can get into a difficult situation at any time. Still, we’re on the right track.”
Robert then addressed reports Barca were looking to re-sign Denis from Villarreal and Nolito from Celta Vigo, while dismissing the prospect of Marc Bartra leaving the club.
“Neither has Bartra asked us to leave, nor will he be leaving. He’s important to us, but we’ll make decisions on other players at some point,” he added.
“[On Nolito], there are many names [linked with us], but we’ll discuss things calmly.
“[Denis Suarez] is a possibility, but it’s up to Villarreal. I’m not clear on whether he has asked to leave.
[On more signings], possibly, yes.”
